Rest For Your Stress

A Trainer giving a lecture on Stress Management raised a glass of water and asked; 'How heavy is this glass of water?'  The audience called out answers ranging from 20g to 500g. The Trainer followed with 'The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.  If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.'  He continued, 'And that's the way it is with stress.  If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, We won't be able to carry on. 'The same applies to this glass of water, You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.'  Whatever burdens you're carrying now, Let them down for a moment if you can.' Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while. And before you go home tonight, be sure to put down all of the day’s burdens.  Better yet…Give each and every care and concern to God.  Don't carry them home. You can pick them up tomorrow.

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:
* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, And some days you're the statue.
* Always keep your words soft and sweet, Just in case you have to eat them.
* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be "Recalled" by their maker.
* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, It was probably worth it.
* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others.
* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, Because then you won't have a leg to stand on.
* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
* When everything's coming your way, You're in the wrong lane.
* You may be only one person in the world, But you may also be the world to one person.
* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
* We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, But they all have to live in the same box.

Be the kind of person who is too blessed to be stressed and too anointed, to be disappointed!

For our God tells us “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest….for your souls” ~  Matthew 11:28 &29.

President, Jerilyn A. Keen, M.A., conducted a Management Training on January 27th 2010 at the Corporate Office.  The training encompassed different management topics from “The Value of Good Communication” to “The Power of Attitude”.  The attendees ranged from Program Managers to Human Resources Management which allowed different perspectives from all levels of management.  The training was highly informative and allowed for exhilarating interaction among the different levels of management and a chance to build alliances and networks between the centers.

On January 5, 2010 the Corporate Office hosted a Clinical Staff Meeting for the D&A counselors and the Clinical Supervisors. The day was spent reviewing and consulting difficult D&A cases.  The Clinical Supervisors collaborated on implementing new forms and documentation practices. Both groups look forward to this time of peer support and enjoyed the camaraderie.

This is “What’s Happening” at our Centers…

PATH – Bloomsburg:  Intensive Adolescent/After School Evening Day Treatment and Alternative Education Program youth worked hard as they gave the center a holiday makeover.  The center was beautifully decorated and contributed to everyone’s enjoyment of the holiday season.  The center would also like to recognize Steven A., who was positively discharged, and wish him the best of luck and the brightest of futures!  IA clients went to the recycling center and were taught about the importance of recycling and its impact on the world.  The AEP students and IA/ASE clients went to the Columbia County Courthouse and were met    by the Honorable Judge Thomas A. James, who spoke with them about making good choices and the consequences of making bad decisions.  The youth had a wonderful time asking questions and getting positive feedback to better their understanding of making the right decision. A great big thank you goes to Secretary, Diane Levan, for coordinating this event. Bloomsburg would also like to congratulate Dave Munson on his promotion to Dean Of Students. Congratulations Dave!

PATH – East Stroudsburg: The staff would like to thank Labor of Love for coming in over the holidays and giving the youth uplifting encouragement that they need during difficult times.  One youth stated “They really helped us to realize life is not all bad and there is so much good if we are willing to open ourselves up”.  The AEP students are hard at work learning and enhancing their minds as they tackle the topics that will help them achieve success in their path through life.  Keep up the great work kids!

PATH – Honesdale:  The center would like to welcome our new Clinical Supervisor, Eric Perry and new Case Worker, Claudia Henrick to the team! Both new team members bring many years of experience in their fields to PATH and look forward to making the Honesdale center and the agency a stronger team!  The AEP students and IA/ASE clients celebrated the holidays by making decorations and creating their own Winter Wonderland at the center.  Community Monitor, Lee Viola, made a delicious Christmas feast for both programs on the 23rd of December.  The positive level and above AEP students took a field trip to the Danielle and Company factory in Scranton.  The students toured the factory and witnessed first hand the process of making soap and actually made their own bars of soap! All of the youth completed community service for December making an impact on the society in Honesdale.

PATH – Lehighton:  The AEP students celebrated the Christmas holiday with a wonderful party and a visit from Santa Claus!  A special thanks goes out to Teacher’s Aide, Miss Gail from all of the AEP teachers and staff at the center for bringing the Christmas Spirit to the students.  Ms. Gail decorated the classrooms with a Christmas tree, hung lights around the room, and handmade decorations, which made a positive Christmas atmosphere for the students.  The AEP would like to acknowledge Kyle for his tremendous efforts and positive influence of the other students in the program!  Great job Kyle!  The Lehighton center will again be participating in the “Pennies for Patients” program for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The Lehighton staff will be holding a bake sale to acquire monetary donations to donate to this great cause.  The staff would like to acknowledge Luke for earning the status of Honor Club Pledge.  Luke has worked extremely hard over the past few months to accomplish this achievement. Way to go Luke!

PATH – Middleburg: Fruit is growing in January!  Halfway House staff are excited to see the “fruits” of their labor coming to life.  Program Manager, Michael Burns explains that the hard work the staff have been putting into the treatment and care of residents at the Halfway House is proving to be very fruitful. Michael states:

“During the past month, the residents and I were driving down the road a ways back from a pickup truck that was hauling hay.  The truck had quite a bit of hay stocked in the back of the truck.  The weather was pretty cold and windy.  As I was driving and maintaining a safe distance back from the truck, a few of the stacks of hay came tumbling down out of the truck and down on the side of the road.  I immediately pulled the van over and saw the truck stopped up ahead.  I asked the guys if they thought we should help out the older gentleman and they all agreed.  I assessed the situation to assure safety and we helped the gentleman put all the hay back into his truck.  After we completed this small community service task, the gentleman asked what he owed us.  I told him that a handshake would suffice. The gentleman extended a handshake to all three of the guys that helped.”

Great work Michael and team!!  Middleburg would also like to announce that one of the residents from the Halfway House competed in a Regional weight

Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it!” – Lou Holtz, NCAA Football Coach

 Resident Success

The Middleburg Halfway House would like to say “congratulations” to Gavin W. who was successfully discharged from the program. Here are a few comments about the program that he would like to share. “My stay at the PATH Halfway House has been a smooth, fun, and pretty easy learning experience. I learned different things from life skills to coping skills.” “A good learning experience due to good staff, good structure, and a good family environment.” “Before coming to the house, I thought it was going to be a useless 6 months… after completing the 6 months…I realized it was just the opposite.”  “I am overall pleased with the treatment and the facility in Middleburg and would recommend the Middleburg Halfway House ANY DAY!

PATH – Milton:  The center is rockin’ and rollin’ this past month and building a full head of steam heading into 2010.  The Day Treatment Program celebrated Christmas this year with their annual Christmas dinner. This event allows staff, clients, and their parents and foster parents, time to come together in fellowship and celebration.  Immediately after the Christmas dinner, the clients created Christmas decorations to add cheer and spirit to the festivities and the overall holiday.  A very special thanks goes out to Trannie Strahan, wife of Community Monitor Jim Strahan, as well as Community Monitor, Ethel Pentz for preparing the wonderful meal and all the trimmings.  The AEP students designed and constructed their own gingerbread houses as a way to bring the spirit of Christmas into the center.  The AEP students also studied anatomy and were involved in the dissection of fetal pigs to get a first hand look at its anatomy.  Thank you to Teacher, Kurt Eck for the donation of the fetal pigs for the experiment. This allowed our students an invaluable experience that heightens the education! The After School Evening Program recently completed its DPW inspection.  The overall inspection was extremely positive! Congratulations to all the Milton staff for coming together as a team in this successful effort!

PATH – Scranton:   The Scranton center has witnessed the spirit of giving as the IA clients helped each other overcome the struggles that some face with through the holidays.  The greatest gift anyone can give is helping each other and it shows that the clients are building those traits to better themselves and each other.  The program worked on holiday decorations to add more Christmas cheer to the center.  The clients also prepared a Christmas meal and worked on their New Year’s resolutions.  Finishing off the holiday festivities, the youth came together and decorated the Christmas tree in the lobby.  The team at Scranton would like to wish Case Worker, Tara Gillick best of luck as she pursues her Master’s Degree while remaining a member of the PATH team.

PATH – South Montrose:   The After School Evening & Day Treatment clients enjoyed making Christmas cookies and a gingerbread tree this holiday season.  The South Montrose staff treated the clients by taking them out for breakfast on Christmas Eve morning as a way to spend time together and celebrate the holiday.  The AEP Program was honored by a visit from Mr. Tony Delonti with the American Lung Association.  Mr. Delonti provided valuable information to the AEP students on the dangers and hazards of smoking.  Between the holiday breaks, Mr. B transformed the classroom into a rainforest to enhance the AEP students studying ecosystems in science class.

“Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things.”

-Joe Paterno, Penn State Football Coach

PATH – State College:  This past month was a month of growth both professionally and personally for the staff and clients at the State College center.  The clients and students continue to show improved progress towards the completion of their personal and academic goals.  The percentage of positive ratings for the AEP students and Day Treatment clients has increased since the previous month.  State College AEP students and Day Treatment clients got into the holiday spirit of giving by participating in the “Eating a Ton This Holiday Season” food drive.  The group raised 879 LBS OF FOOD and a TON of smiles to those who were recipients of the food!!Great job team!!!

PATH – Williamsport:   The spirit of giving was alive in the Day Treatment program as the clients were treated to a holiday meal by the Day Treatment staff.  Each of the staff brought in a side dish and Weis Markets donated a turkey for the meal.  The meal was a great time for the Day Treatment staff & clients to come together and celebrate the holidays in a celebratory setting.  The Day Treatment staff donated supplies for a holiday craft project for the clients also.  The clients were able to complete craft projects and give their creations to their parents for Christmas.  The clients thoroughly enjoyed getting into the spirit of giving by making the crafts to give as presents.  The AEP program is celebrating the halfway point of the year as the second semester comes to a close and the staff and students focus on finishing out a powerful school year.

Maria Farnell, Caseworker at the Bloomsburg Center, is a team player and is always helpful to all staff. Although Maria is often put in a very difficult position with families she continues to be persistent. She is a great communicator and always brings laughter to the center!  Thank you for all that you do to make a difference!
