From the President’s Desk...

Because They Don’t Forget and They Can’t Ignore

A few weeks ago I was on my cell phone in the grocery store talking to Regional Director, Bob Vanderwall, about a critical client situation.  After confidentially discussing the plan of action, I hung up and continued down the isle choosing the items I needed.  I saw a young mother directly in front of me, I smiled when she looked at me, excused myself for passing in front of her and moved on down the isle.  After I passed her, I heard her say “Jeri?” and although I didn’t recognize her at first….the smile was so familiar.  She turned out to be a former client, who I had worked with more than 15 years ago.  Now almost 30, and all grown up, she recognized my voice as I was talking on my cell with Bob. She approached me, we quickly caught up and she thanked me for all that I had done to help her all those years ago.

During our brief reunion in the middle of the market, she shared some things with me that touched my heart.  I share them with you now so you know how very important what you do is to others.  She said…”I recognized your voice… I have heard your voice and all the things you told me about letting go of the emotional cancer so it doesn’t poison me.  Your words have played over and over in my head all of these years.  I haven’t forgotten all the things you told me about dealing with my pain, digging out the bitter roots and the need to forgive, not for my offender but just for me.”  She shared that she hasn’t been able to ignore the importance of relational intimacy either. What she learned helped her to be a good wife and mother. She said, “You know I didn’t have that with either of my parents, but I was determined to do it differently with my kids.  I am sure I would have repeated the same patterns my parents did to me…because of the cycle, if I hadn’t learned to do things differently. Now every time I want to run away from my husband, my responsibilities and my kids like my mom did, I think of what you guys at Bethesda taught me and I work my steps”.

So when you are tempted to think your efforts are meaningless or that all you try to instill goes in one ear and out the other…think again.  Plant the seeds…do your best and the rest will take care of itself….because they don’t forget and they can’t ignore the powerful  truth about relationships that we share with them.

All my best,

Jerilyn

News from our Corporate Office…

Regional Director Scott Constantini provided a solo Normative Systems training for PATH staff on August 19th, as Regional Director, Steve Gaito was on vacation. Scott once again did an excellent job!  The participants relayed how much they enjoyed hearing all of the first hand experiences and advice Scott was able to share due to his many years working with our youth!

On August 5th, Clinical Director Denise Scott, conducted a fantastic Trauma and Loss Training! Those who attended it said that Denise taught them to better recognize clients that are in the grieving process and to understand the stages they go through after having suffered a traumatic event.  The trainees felt as though they were much better equipped to help their clients get past their trauma and loss and move forward. Great job Denise!

The Safety Committee recently had their final meeting before the school year kicks back into full swing. Corporate Business Manager, Josh Weisen, would like to thank everyone in the PATH organization for doing a great job at minimizing the accidents and injuries over the summer months. Through the grace of God, we had no major accidents or injuries over the summer! Now we look towards tackling the new school year and the flu season that is coming up with the goal of zero incidents.

The Federal Government has issued a new packet for schools and education providers on how to prevent the spread of flu germs and to heighten our state of awareness for the H1NI Swine Flu Virus.  The Safety Committee reminds everyone to please use the best hygiene practices such as washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth when coughing, and keeping and maintaining all surface areas and items that are regularly used, clean and free from potential germ viruses.  The safety committee also would ask that everyone to do an inventory and replenishment of their first aid kits and make sure you are prepared in case of emergency.  Be proactive...not reactive!

President, Jerilyn Keen and PATH's Safety Committee Chairman, Joshua Weisen, recently gained access to a safety hotline email system through Safety Outsourcing. The safety hotline will allow any member of the PATH organization to email Josh in regards to questions about safety. These topics will range from CPR and First Aid to OSHA Regulations.  This is a great tool that will allow PA Treatment & Healing to become even more safety conscious and strengthen our mission to provide quality service and a safe atmosphere for the staff and clients PATH works with.

The next Safety Committee meeting is scheduled for September 11, 2009 at 10 A.M. This day is also a day of remembrance for the men and women that died from the horrific events in 2001. It is also important to remember and honor the service men and women that went overseas to defend our freedom voluntarily. We also remember and honor the brave men and women that volunteer their time and lives at home in the states as fire fighters, EMT's, police, and other emergency response and rescue workers, that went into harms way to save the lives of those affected by the tragedy. Some of these aforementioned individuals gave up the greatest gift of all, their lives, so that we can live another day and continue to live our lives and provide our services to the children and clients we work with.  Take the time to remember the fallen and honor them by living each day to its fullest and always giving 100% of yourself in everything you do and to the people that depend on you.

In the past month, the Halfway House had the pleasure of having Perry County Children &Youth  and Columbia County  Juvenile Probation visit and tour the facility.  Due to this visit, we have entered into contract with Perry County Children &Youth!  The Halfway House was also recently added to the Capital Area CBHNP contract which includes Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Perry counties!

The Corporate Office would also like to thank the PATH centers who have taken the initiative to contact their local Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, and Staples to apply for grants! The time you took to do so may pay off!

This is “What’s Happening” at our Centers…

PATH – Bloomsburg:  Our clients have continued to excel with the Path of Life Model and are opening up more and more about their past hurts! They have also been learning about and utilizing empathy skills which has helped them to understand themselves and each other better.  This understanding has also led to them doing a great job of being supportive of one another throughout their healing processes. Our staff are continuing to work as a team and believe strongly that the Path of Life Model assignments are having a very positive effect on their clients and are showing them how their past is still affecting them today. Our center has also definitely been busy enjoying the summer! We have gone on several outings including the Montour Preserve, where the clients were able to fish, and the arcade, where Program Manager, Jodee Strine, won 100 tickets!  We have also had a number of track & field days where the clients participated in events such as relay races and tug-of-war and ball toss competitions!  Also, Regional Director, Steve Gaito, and Program Manager, Jodee Strine, were recently able to present the IA program at Milestones EMF (Extra Miles for Families) and Columbia Montour Snyder Union MHMR.

PATH – East Stroudsburg:   Welcome to our newest intern, Romanay L.! Our center is currently developing a relationship with Marywood University in order to assist their students who are working on their Master’s degree in social work.  One of our Day Treatment clients, Jay Jay, has been busy playing in basketball tournaments through the Labor of Love group and has been doing a great job! Day Treatment Supervisor, Josie Castellano, is currently working on  planning a music competition where our clients would get the chance to show off their musical talents in an appropriate and artistic manner! We are looking forward to that! Thank you to our psychologist, Karen Livingood, who has recently assisted us in setting up a presentation with our local MH/MR facility this month! Our staff have also been busy working together to help spruce up the center before the start of the new school year by putting a fresh coat of paint on all the classrooms! Also, thanks to our Dean of Students, Pete Charney, the floors have also gotten a good cleaning!

PATH - Honesdale: Over the month of July, our clients were busy enjoying the summer and participating in interactive groups focusing on teambuilding skills, family relationships, feelings, and positive change.  They have also worked really hard this month on maintaining positive levels!  Our center has also continued with our community service projects at a local park and Senior Community Center.  All of the clients have made an invested effort in these projects and are really doing a great job!  The Honesdale Center would like to say goodbye and thank you to the employees who have recently moved on and would also like to welcome our new Program Manager, Mark Bonfiglio, and Clinical Supervisor, Tara Watkins! We are happy to have you as a part of our team!

PATH - Lehighton: Our center would like to recognize client, Genesis, M., who has recently earned honor club pledge status! Genesis has been in our program since the beginning of May and continues to make positive strides in all aspects of her life - Great job Genesis! Our clients recently spent a fantastic day at the Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp on Friday, July 31st! Everyone really enjoyed watching the Eagles practice and were also able to participate in activities such as kicking field goals, mini golf, and a football toss! Everyone then had lunch at Old Country Buffet afterwards before returning to the center.  Our center is also continuing with our community service efforts by cleaning up at our adopted trail at Betzville State Park.

PATH - Middleburg: We are happy to share that our marketing blitz has continued to pay off!  In less than 2 months, we went from 1 resident to 5!  The Halfway House staff have done a great job keeping the guys busy during the summer months.  We have been utilizing our teacher, Carrie Haney, from the Milton center in keeping the residents academically focused.  Unfortunately Mrs. Carrie’s last day was on August 11th.  Thank you Mrs. Carrie for your dedication and servants heart for the second summer in a row!  At a staff meeting, we came up with the idea of building a fire pit for our guys; it is about 90% done! (see picture)  Once it is fully finished, we will be able to do therapeutic groups outside along with some relaxation and recreation!

PATH - Milton: The Milton Center was pleased to host the Board of Directors for their Monthly Board meeting!  Following their meeting, the Board took time to observe the Day Treatment programs in action.  They were able to see a townhouse and a therapeutic group facilitated by Foster Care Coordinator, Stephanie Rice. The Milton Center would like to thank the Board for taking time out of their busy schedules to observe a small part of the great work being done by all PATH staff on a daily basis! The staff at the Milton center would like to commend Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Amy Seamon and Alissa Hinkal!  Over the last several months, the Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Program has seen significant growth thanks to the hard work of these individuals!  Thank you and keep up the hard work! Several of our clients have continued to work with Community Monitor, James Strahan, to cultivate their garden.  The clients are now reaping the rewards of their harvest!  They have been enjoying many different types of salads, fried zucchini, etc!  The clients also recently participated in an independent living skills group facilitated by Brian Johnson, the husband of our Clinical Supervisor.  The clients learned to prepare several different dishes including French toast, waffles, pancakes, sausage, bacon, strawberry shortcake, strawberry syrup, and different frozen drinks.  The clients and staff were then able to enjoy sampling all of their wonderful creations! Yum! Thanks Brian!

PATH - Scranton: In the past month, our clients have been working on processing emotions, participating in Relationship-based CBT groups, and taking part in several other hands-on therapeutic activities.  They have also been enjoying playing volleyball as a social activity.  Our center has really been focusing on treatment goals over the summer months and have tried to reach these goals through therapeutic recreation and social activities. Our team would also like to congratulate our Drug & Alcohol Counselor, Heather Thorburn, and our Science teacher, Sean McCormick, on their recent marriage!

PATH - South Montrose: Our IA program has continued to operate smoothly over the summer! Our clients have been busy learning the various components of the Relationship Based CBT model, as well as leadership skills, anger management, life skills, and how to get along with each other better.  Our staff have also been working diligently to maintain positive relationships with all referring agencies! A big thanks to President, Jerilyn Keen, and our Regional Director, Scott Constantini! With their efforts, our center was once again awarded a contract to perform D&A Counseling at an increased rate for the 2009-2010 year!  Our clients are looking forward to several “end of the summer” outings that we have planned before the start of school.  These include a trip to the Blueberry Festival in Montrose, a trip to the 152nd Harford Fair, and a BBQ at one of our local state parks!  Congrats to our Clinical Supervisor, Tiffany Benedict, who announced she is expecting another wonderful addition to her family!

PATH - State College: Our clients are continuing to work hard and complete the Path of Life model by showing dedication and motivation during group work, individual, and family time.  We are excited to see their progress towards getting on the right path! During the month of the July, our clients were able to go on even more outings! We attended an educational program at  Millbrook Marsh, visited a local farmer’s market, and toured the State College Arts Festival! We are hoping to be able to go on more trips in August.  Our clients have also been busy completing several community service projects! They washed fire trucks and ambulances at local fire stations, built bat boxes, cleaned up trash at many local state parks, and also worked on widening nearby hiking trails!

PATH - Williamsport: The weather is starting to heat up and so are things at the Williamsport PATH!  This month, the clients are doing extensive work with the Relationship-based CBT model and learning about beginnings so they will be ready to start a new school year.  The Day Treatment is currently planning an end of the summer party where the staff will be providing an assortment of food for the clients.  Shannon Tagliaferri, Day Treatment Supervisor, has been taking the honor club pledge members to the bowling alley and is also planning to take them to the Little League World Series as a reward for their positive decisions! The case workers are continuing to strive for excellence and have been doing a very good job working with their caseloads.  Karen Poust, our Community Service Coordinator, along with our clients, have been keeping our center looking beautiful!  We would like to wish Katie Drick a great upcoming school year as she will be our new Dean of Students! We would also like to welcome our new Community Monitor, Trevor Ebner and welcome back Heather Heiny as a math teacher! We are excited to see the AEP referrals continuing to come in at a steady pace and we look forward to a fantastic school year, which will begin on September 1st!

OUR MANAGEMENT TEAM

Each month we feature a member of our Management Team as a way to honor their dedication and commitment to making our Agency the very best it can be!  This month we highlight

Dwight Evans, Clinical Supervisor

Dwight and his wife, Eve, have five children, Collin (22), Norelle (15), Lane (10), Levi (8), and Eden (5).  Dwight graduated from Valley Forge Christian College with a B.S. in Bible. He then became the Assistant Director of a boy’s group home named Choice Place, Inc. in Ashland, Ohio, while also working on earning his Master of Divinity at Ashland Theological Seminary. Dwight then took a position as a Case Therapist at Concern, Inc. and worked there for two years before starting as a Casework Supervisor for PATH in 1988.  Dwight has worked for PATH in several positions since then and is now the Clinical Supervisor at the East Stroudsburg center.  He has also earned his Master of Arts in Counseling at Liberty University in 2003.

In his free time, Dwight is a Men’s Ministry Leader at his church, does performance tuning on Subaru Imports, and does target shooting with handguns and rifles.  Dwight is also interested in military weapons, specifically those from World War II, and is a Cleveland Browns fan!

Dwight’s thoughts on PATH’s mission and purpose: “There can be no more noble cause in our culture and time then to minister to youth and their families.  I think, even more so than teachers, we touch the future.  It is our divine calling to help others in their affliction - to heal - and to discover and walk - set free - into their created purpose. ”
