The Echoes of Life

Contrary to what you may have been told, God is not focused on our faults.  He is not sitting up there waiting for us to mess up.  He is for us.  He is our biggest advocate!  His word tells us that He approves us and loves us unconditionally.  He knows that we will make mistakes, and that we are growing.  He knows we will mess up and when we do, He wants us to repent, ask for forgiveness, let it go and move on.  None of us are finished products.  We are a work in progress.

With this in mind we need to be careful not to go through life criticizing and picking on ourselves.  Some people are so down on themselves that it is like they have a civil war going on inside.  Having this type of internal strife makes it impossible for them to love others and have healthy relationships.  Matthew 22:39 commands us to “Love our neighbor as we love ourselves.”  Without love for yourself you can’t love God or another person; because you can’t truly give away something that you don’t have inside.  Here is a story that helps to illustrate this concept.

A father and his young son were walking on some trails in the mountains one day.  The son lost his footing, slipped and fell out of his father’s eyesight, about 20-30 yards down the mountain.  When he came to a stop, scared and desperate, the son yelled “Somebody Help Me!” and he heard “Somebody Help Me!”  Hearing a response but not understanding the concept of an echo, he yelled “Who are you?” And he heard “Who are you?”  The little boy didn’t like what he was hearing.  He became frustrated and said “You are a coward” and he heard back “You are a coward.”  Then he yelled “Oh yeah! You’re a fool” and sure enough he heard “Oh yeah! You’re a fool.”  The young boy’s dad finally made his way back down the trail to where his son had fallen.  The boy immediately told him that every time he called out someone yelled the same thing back at him.  He asked “Dad, who is that?”  Thinking for a moment his Dad replied, “That is the Echo of Life, son.  You see son, you get back what you send out in life.”  He told him, “If you send out negative, you get back negative.  But when you send out positive thoughts, words, and actions, those return to you as well.”  The father told him, “Let’s give it a try.  Yell you’re a winner, Tommy.”  He did and he heard, “You’re a winner, Tommy.”  “You’ve got what it takes.” and he heard “You’ve got what it takes.”  “You can make it,” and he heard “You can make it!”

The enemy wants each of us to live in condemnation.  He wants us to be consumed with our past mistakes, insecurities and self-doubts.  He wants us to have strife and war going on inside.  We can arm ourselves against this type of negativity by obeying what Ephesians 6:14 instructs, “To put on the breastplate of God’s approval daily.”  Remember God is for us.  He is eagerly looking at what we do right each day and He is cheering us on with continuous positives echoes!

You’re a winner!  You’re a winner!  You’re a winner!

You’ve got what it takes!  You’ve got what it takes!  You’ve got what it takes!

I believe in you!  I believe in you!  I believe in you!

Let us remember what the Father told his son “You get back what you send out.”

From my heart to yours,

Jerilyn

News from our Administrative Office…

It's hard to believe that the kids are back in school already!  The summer flew by and before long we will be getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas!  First, let's enjoy some of the fall weather that will be arriving before that white stuff makes its appearance this year!

The month of August was busy as ever with getting our AEP staff trained for the start of the new school year.  Collette Benner, HR Executive Assistant, was busy mastering her CPR/First Aid instructor skills as she conducted four classes in August!  Program Manager Steve Rizzo also conducted two classes in August.  Our SCM instructors, Bob Vanderwall, Lisa Vandermark, Chris Baines and Scott Constantini, also completed numerous trainings during August.

The AEP All-Staff Training was held at Administration on August 21st for the Central Region centers and at Scranton on August 24th for the Northern Region centers.  Each center conducted trainings on-site for their AEP staff during the week of August 21st as well.  We welcome back our returning AEP staff and welcome new AEP staff that were hired!  We look forward to another great year!

Bethesda Highlights

Attorney & MA Alignment Consultant, Richard Gold, was hosted at the Lehighton Center on August 1st to observe the quality of our therapeutic services.  Dr. Elizabeth Campbell and Courtney Coover from the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and Department of Public Welfare visited the Lehighton Center on August 17th.  These visits were necessary as part of obtaining approval as a Medical Assistance provider.  President Keen is proud to report that all three individuals determined our program and treatment to be clinically sound.  Thanks to all of the staff at Lehighton, especially Steve Gaito, Dwight Evans and Ray Birk!

We are excited about a new committee that was formed to develop an incentive program for our staff.  We thank Scranton Program Manager Cindy Wohlken for proposing the idea to President Keen.  In addition to Cindy who will serve as Chairman, the committee consists of Scott Constantini, Jennifer Napp, John Dunne, Erica Frey, Chris Baines and Collette Benner.  We look forward to being able to recognize and award our staff for the outstanding efforts that they exhibit!

We are happy to share that our Sciota Center is officially now the East Stroudsburg Center.  The relocation to the new facility occurred on August 25th.  We thank all the staff who had a part in coordinating the move and moving all the things from one building to another.  They worked all weekend long in the rain but the smiles didn’t leave their faces as they are thrilled with how professional and functional the building will be!  We are excited about their new facility (pictured on the right) and look forward to growing to capacity at this location!

This is “What’s Happening” at Our Centers…

Bloomsburg:  The Day Treatment staff took all of the clients on a field trip to the Little League World Series.  We thank Shelby, Denny and Matt for taking the initiative to offer this experience to our kids!  The Honor Club and positive clients were able to enjoy a trip to a local elk farm.  This trip was very entertaining to all.  Thanks to Denny and john for arranging the trip!  The AEP is back in session and we welcome back each of the AEP staff for another wonderful year!

East Stroudsburg:  The staff were busy in the month of August getting ready fo the move to the new facility.  The staff and clients continue to work very hard to unpack all of the boxes and put everything away.  We thank all of the staff for their efforts to get moved into the new building for the start of the new school year.  Check out the picture!  We welcome two new teachers, Konstantine Argiriadi and Charles Courtney, a teacher's aide, Darla Harris, and a community monitor, Walter Kowal, to the team!  The clients continue their community service efforts at the Burnley Workshop.

Honesdale: On August 18th, the Honesdale Center held an open-house for the referring agencies and school districts.  Representatives from Wayne County Children and Youth, Wayne County Probation and Pike County Probation attended.  Community Monitor Lee Viola continues to paint and beautify the center.  He has painted, stained and stripped and waxed the floors!  Thank you for all that you have done at the center.  A personal thank you to Teacher Mary Griffin who allowed the center to use her personal equipment to do the floors.  We thank all of the staff for their continued dedication and hard work!  The Day Treatment clients have been completing projects at the Hawley, Hamlin and Honesdale Senior Centers as well as the Hawley Park and Waymart Recycling Drop-off.  Way to go, gang!

Lehighton:  The Community Service Program officially began at the Lehighton Center on August 22nd.  The planning and coordinating has finally come to fruition!  We are excited about offering this additional component of service in Carbon County!  Drug & Alcohol Counselor, Ray Birk is working with Gnaen Huetten Hospital to get referrals for the Drug & Alcohol Program.  Lehighton staff were all very instrumental in making the Medical Assistance visits very successful.  YOu represented the agency well!

Lewistown:  The staff were busy making improvements to the center in preparation for the beginning of the school year.  We thank the Group Home residents and staff for their assistance with these projects.  The Day Treatment programming has focused on coping skills, leadership and other specific client issues.  We congratulate Secretary Lisa Orloski for making the Dean's list last semester.  Way to go, Lisa!

Group Home - Middleburg:  The Group Home spent the last two weeks of summer enjoying field trips to the World War II Museum in Eldrid and to the Eckley Miners’ Village in Weatherly.  The boys learned a lot while enjoying some time away from the home.  Check out the picture!  The boys were busy cleaning up around the house and painting a couple of the bedrooms.  The boys continue to assist at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church’s Soup Kitchen and the Snyder County Recycling Center.  Congratulations to Lindsey and Rob Walter on the birth of their son, Austin Hunter, on August 25th at 9:49 p.m.  This little guy made his appearance a little earlier than expected, weighing in at 4 pounds, 4 ounces and 17 inches long.

Milton:  We welcome back the returning AEP staff to the Milton Center along with some new faces.  Matt Keener and Lori Long have joined our team of teaching staff.  Community Monitors Jim Strahan and Roger Zettlemoyer along with some of the Day Treatment clients continue to improve the overall appearance of the center from replacing two slabs of concrete on the sidewalk, adding shale to the low spots in the parking area for the vans, putting up shelves in the AEP, and patching and painting walls.  In addition, Jim repaired the weed whacker.  The Day Treatment Program had two successful discharges in the month of August.  Keep up the great work!

Montoursville:  All of the staff enjoyed a pizza party following a joint meeting with the AEP and Day Treatment staff in an effort to build a unity between the programs.  The get-together proved to be successful as a way to keep the lines of communication open.  A special thanks to Day Treatment Supervisor Gary Shipman for renting a floor buffer and cleaning the tile floors at the center on his free time.  An agreement has been made with Head Principal Bruce Elliot to have the Community Service clients clean the Williamsport High School.  We congratulate Matt Cowger on his acceptance to Bloomsburg University to pursue his Master’s Degree in Education.  Matt will be staying on board with us to assist as a teacher in the AEP.

Scranton:  August was a busy month at the Scranton Center.  All of the staff contributed to painting several rooms at the center.  Dean of Students Bob Mattioli did an impressive job steam cleaning all of the carpets!  Drug and Alcohol Counselor Heather Thorburn was able to supply the center with recycling containers so the center can begin recycling plastic and aluminum along with the paper recycling already in progress.  Thank you, Heather!  Dental Hygienist students from Allied Services visited the center to speak to the students in the Day Treatment Program.  The presentation focused on care of the teeth and the effects drugs can have on you teeth.  Each client was supplied with a care package that included a toothbrush, toothpaste, sugar-free candy and literature on oral healthcare.  Day Treatment Supervisor Mike DiMattia arranged a community service project in Olyphant for the clients to clean up after the town's annual picnic.  The kids did an excellent job even in the rain!  The last week of the Day Treatment summer schedule was filled with fun activities.  On August 21st, the clients completed Nay Aug Park's Nature Walk.  On August 24th, the clients had a cook-out at McDade Park and held team events.  The winning team will be treated to dinner with the staff of their choice!  The week ended with a trip to the bowling lanes.  A good time was had by all!  On August 28th, the Scranton Center held a potluck luncheon mixer with the AEP staff and Day Treatment Staff.  Everyone brought in their favorite dish and they all feasted.  Michelle Ackroyd's Lemon Lush Dessert was a bi hit - it received rave reviews by all!  The staff were recognized for all of their hard work over the summer preparing for the school year.  The AEP staff were welcomed back and new teacher, Andrew Bennie, received a warm welcome!  The staff would like to congratulate Tara Krisiak for being chosen as the Employee of the Month for August.  We are grateful for all that she does at the Scranton Center!

South Montrose:  The Day Treatment clients helped to clean and paint the center as part of their Community Service Project.  Caseworker Dan Beesley and the clients spent the last part of the summer working on Normative Systems and also worked with the Drug and Alcohol Counselor Chrissy Carter.  The Day Treatment had a positive discharge and will miss one of their HOnor Club members as she returns to her home school.  The AEP started back in session with the first week of school focusing on orientating the students.  Drug and Alcohol Counselor Chrissy Carter along with President Keen have worked with the Susquehanna County Correction Facility to secure a contract for Chrissy to provide individual and group counseling to male and female inmates.  This is the very first opportunity for us to offer drug and alcohol services in the prison setting.  The SOuth Montrose Center was able to set up at the Harford Fair to promote the D&A Program as well as the other services that we offer.

Congratulations To…

A big thank-you to Medical Assistance Specialist Michele Nixon for researching, selecting and implementing a very important billing software program, EZ Claim, which is necessary for participation with our Managed Care Organization, Community Care Behavioral Health.

Fred and his wife, Kathy, are the proud parents of three children Erin, Matt and Rachel.  They currently do not have any grandchildren, but they enjoy spending time with their “grandpets” Jinxie and Indiana Jones.  Fred is a graduate of Marquette University with a degree in Psychology and Political Science.  Fred earned a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University.

Fred has worked with the Department of Justice since 1974 including the U.S. Parole Commission for 3 years, the Criminal Division for 1 year and with the U.S. Attorney’s Office from 1978 to present.  Fred is affiliated with the Union County Youth Commission.  He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Fred enjoys spending his free time gardening, traveling, dining and attending occasional concerts of every type of music, especially rock and classical but excluding opera.  Fred shares his thoughts on Bethesda’s mission and purpose, “The earlier there is intervention with a person, regardless of the source or nature of the problem, the better chance there is that that problem will be overcome.  All of Bethesda’s staff whom I have met impress me as truly motivated and fully qualified to help the young persons referred to us.  This gives me hope and should give hope to others.”
