Acceptable measures for recidivism in the juvenile
sector vary with the number or prior offenses, the severity of the offenses and
the type of program placement (i.e. tracking and outreach; daily programming and
interaction; group homes; foster homes; therapeutic communities; and secure
residential programs). Most types
of institutional care report recidivism of around 50% within one year of program
discharge. Day treatment and
intensive probation report recidivism of 15% to 20% for adjudicated delinquent
offenses.
The first study to track the recidivism of clients
referred to and discharged from Bethesda Day Treatment Center was conducted in
1985, less than two years following the inception of the program to serve Union
County. The study found the
Bethesda Day Treatment experience with client recidivism to be extremely
favorable.
There were fifty-four clients from Union County who had
been referred to and discharged from the Bethesda Day Treatment Program.
With a population base of forty-eight clients discharged for twelve or
more months from the treatment program with five recidivating within the first
twelve months of discharge. The
overall recidivism rate of 10.4% is well below any benchmark statistics.
Delinquent Recidivism: One case in twenty
recidivating within a twelve-month period of discharge from Bethesda Day
Treatment Center yields a rate of 5%.
Dependent Recidivism: Four cases in twenty-eight recidivating
within a twelve-month period of discharge from Bethesda Day Treatment Center
yields a rate of 14%.
