Students raise $1,000 for charity
Sunday, April 22, 2007
The students of Bethesda Day Treatment Center's Alternative Education Program held their third annual Pennies for Patients campaign.

Led by teacher's aide Nicole Bingaman, with assistance from all of the Bethesda staff, the students raised over $1,000 to aid The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their quest to find a cure for blood cancers.

The Pennies for Patients program gives students the powerful experience of achieving a goal that benefits others and teaches them why it is so important to fund the research to find cures.  This year's experience also incorporated money management for the students.  With assistance from the Northumberland Credit Union, a savings account was opened and students learned about the banking system through the use of deposit slips and a statement book.

The class with the highest amount raised each week received a special reward, which were made possible through donations from Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut, as well as a field trip to Sensational Sweets Candy factory in Lewisburg.

Bethesda staff assisted in fundraising by donating items for an auction and agreeing to participate in activities such as getting a pie in the face or consuming a concoction that was dreamed up in "Fear Factor" style.
